Set on the edge of Spondon, Dale Road Park is much more than an open space. Today it is a much-loved community park, home to football, play, walking, wildlife and some of the best views across the surrounding countryside.
But the park has a story of its own.
Before today's playing fields and paths were created, the land formed part of the countryside around Spondon. For a time, Army huts stood here, providing a home for families whose memories remain part of the park's history. In 1994, the site was transformed into the recreation ground we know today, creating a valuable green space for the growing local community.
Since then, Dale Road Park has continued to evolve. Local people have played an important role in shaping and caring for the park, with community-led improvements adding new planting, paths, wildlife areas and places to sit and enjoy the surroundings.
One of the park's most distinctive features is the Dale Road Toposcope, created through a community partnership involving local schools, businesses and organisations. Standing at the top of the park, it celebrates the remarkable views across the surrounding landscape and helps visitors discover the wider countryside beyond Spondon.
Today, the park brings together sport, nature, history and community. Football pitches sit alongside areas for wildlife, while paths, open grassland and the pond provide space to walk, relax and explore.
And its story isn't finished.
